Nerds

Calling ALL Nerds!

When I was a girl, sitting in front of the TV with my snacks, watching Xena, in awe of how great a woman and her story could be, I was genuinely inspired. Looking back the stunts look silly, the plotlines are simple and the show has lost a lot of its luster, but every time I see it, my eyes still light up.  I’m still in love with it all, as cheesy as it may be.  My almost unhealthy obsession with Disney movies is one of my favorite parts about myself.  And the 7 box sets of Buffy and 5 box sets of Angel on my bookshelf are a testament to my genuine love for both amazing dramas.  In college I could not help but play DDR at least twice a week.  And with my husband we’ve watched Star Trek, many of the Marvel movies, and now all of Chuck.  What I’m trying to say is that my nerdy parts are some of my favorite! And I LOVE that I have friends who nerd out about these and MANY other things.  The nerdy way of life is definitely the one for me.

I also feel that in the last few years nerd culture has begun to be celebrated more and more.  The Avengers movies have been some of the most popular ever made.  That is a testament to the coolness of nerdiness.  But despite the fact that nerdy hobbies are taking over, and nerdiness is starting to get some love, the people who make this culture and lifestyle what it is rarely get celebrated.  It happens, but not nearly as often I’d like.  Nerds span all lifestyles, ages, cultures, races and even many interests.  They are diverse and unique, but also inclusive and genuine.  And I want to celebrate nerds.  The ones that are as nerdy as can be and all about their neediness, and the ones that are only secretly in love with their nerdy side.

So as a photographer I am starting a new art collection: The Nerd Out Chronicles!  And I want YOU to show me your nerdy side! So share this with friends, family and everyone you know and contact KatFour Photo to be featured!

A Different Kind of Newborn Session – Lifestyle Newborn Photography

Many newborn photographers offer very pretty sessions of sleeping, nude infants posed in whimsical poses, wearing nothing or only a hat. If this is the type of session you are looking for then there are many options for you to choose from. This is not the type of session I offer.

KatFour Photo | Columbia Missouri Newborn Photography

First my sessions always happen in your home. I do not need you to drive to a studio or my home or anywhere else. I will pack up my lights and camera and arrive at your home at a time that is best for you. Your home and your nursery are the space in which you live with your baby and I want to capture that. You in your own special environment! This also gives me the opportunity to capture your unique touches. The nursery, your baby’s toys and furniture, etc.

We want to pick a time with lots of light streaming into your nursery so that your photos have tons of natural light. In case that isn’t possible I will have steady lights to supplement the light. I will not use flash as that can be irritating to both tired parents and baby.

While most newborn sessions want your baby to be asleep and curled up, I’d much rather they be awake and interacting with you. Bright open eyes make for some memorable pictures. If your baby is asleep, that’s fine, but not a requirement. We will not be waiting for baby to take a nap to take their pictures.

While many photographers insist that you schedule within the first week of your baby’s life, I am a bit more flexible. You want to get the photos done early, since babies change so much so quickly, but any time within the first few weeks is fine.

Most newborn sessions have a sweet, nude baby in the pictures. This is not the style I prefer. I’d much rather you pick out a few of your favorite newborn outfits. Onesies, favorite blankets, etc. Comfy swaddled baby or with feet and hands peeking out. Since the session takes place in your home you can change outfits as many or as few times as you like. And if a diaper change is needed it’s a great opportunity to get pictures of room details or baby feet.

Rather than pose you with your baby, I’d prefer to let you interact naturally and adjust the poses for better pictures. I want to showcase your relationship with your baby and to let you have fun together while I capture it. I will make suggestions for small adjustments, but my photographs will really focus on you and your family.

If you’d like to use any props: specific toys, blankets, clothes, areas of the home; just let me know and we can incorporate that into your session. I want to make sure you have the memories you’re hoping for.

Overall my hope is to capture you in your environment, doing what you do. I want to capture your special time just interacting. And when you need a private moment, I can focus on photographing your space. We can get lifestyle photos of you just being you and some posed family photographs as well. All in all, I want you to have a special, personal experience.

Proposing? The important thing you might be missing!

So you’re proposing!  You’ve planned it all out.  You racked your brain for the PERFECT location and you found it.  You’ve stood in front of the mirror for hours and practiced just what you’re going to say.  You enlisted the best friend to find out the ideal ring for your sweetie.  And you’ve got the music or dancing or written personalized messages that will mean the world to your wonderful, lucky fiancé… What could you possibly be missing? A professional photographer.  Someone to be there, hiding out in the bushes, or standing off to the side, who will know how to capture your moment!  Your friends can get some sweet snapshots on their smart phones, but what if you want to print them someday?  What if they miss the moment that she starts crying or laughing or hugs you?

The photographer will get her reaction, and all the special moments that you will both want to look back on.  Those moments that you may not even notice in the moment, because you’re nervous or excited or ecstatic or all of the above, will be captured forever for you to share together over and over again and to show your family and friends.

If friends and family are there the photographer can capture your interactions with them.  And if it’s just the two of you, they will make sure to capture the intimate moments you share.  If you schedule enough time, you can have some of your posed photos after the proposal and get pictures of your smiling excited selves basking in the moment.

If the proposal is a surprise, let your photographer know what you’re planning and where.  They will probably scope out the location and find the best place to be unnoticed to photograph your special moments.  Aside from their skill and experience, hiring a pro has one additional benefit.  They are a stranger.  Even if your fiancé sees a stranger with a camera, it will not immediately give away what’s happening.

This past weekend I had the privilege of photographing a great couple who were so sweet and fun, Tyler and Megan!  This cute couple grew up and met right here in Columbia, Missouri. They dated for several years and were married 8 months ago! Now Tyler is going into the US Air Force and their lives may take them to new and exciting locations and adventures.  To remember Columbia, Missouri they have decided to have this session and get several memorable photos. Check out these cute pics at Mizzou at the Columns and Quad and at the Memorial Student Union. Wishing these awesome sweethearts all the best!

Valentine's Day Photos

Valentine’s Day Photography

Valentine’s Day always brings wonderful romantic possibilities, along with interesting challenges. There is always a possibility to wow our families and significant others. Here are some suggestions for WOW factor gifts you can orchestrate with your favorite photographer!

Romantic Couples Session The most obvious Valentine’s Day session or gift is a session for a couple. Whether you’re dating, engaged, newlyweds or have been married for years, this type of session can help you find some fun together and to make some new memories. You can schedule a session prior to V-Day and get your prints by the day. Or buy a gift certificate to gift your sweetheart for Valentine’s Day and schedule your session with your sweetie after the day.

Pick a location that is special to you and your relationship and schedule something that will showcase your relationship and what this holiday means to the two of you.

Boudoir Session Another great gift idea is to schedule a boudoir session and gift your sweetie some beautiful photographs of you. Obviously you have to be over 18 to schedule this type of session and I recommend only scheduling something like this if you’re in a long term relationship and sure of where the photographs will end up.

Dress up in something sexy or nothing at all for some sizzling pictures to gift your significant other or just for yourself. To make this type of session more comfortable look for a photographer of the same gender.

Rent a hotel room or dress up your bedroom for a comfortable setting for this session.

Family Session Schedule a fun session with a Valentine’s theme! Decorate a pink and red theme, make some valentine’s together or bake some heart shaped cookies. Schedule a session to celebrate the love of your entire family and have a great time.

Kid’s Session Kids and hearts, what can be cuter? Schedule a kid’s session with some V-Day candy, hearts, cookies or cupcakes. Or just dress up in some Valentine’s Day with some roses or flower petals for an adorable session full of smiles. Balloons and hot chocolate on a cold February day can be another sweet option. Talk to your photographer about a special and unique way to style your kids for your holiday shoot.

Newborn/Infant Session Babies are the product of love, so what better way to remember your first Valentine’s Day after your bundle of joy arrives than with a session focused on the new arrival and his loving parents. Blocks to spell out “Love”, VDay candy, and red and pink blankets can be great props. Your photographer can help you come up with cute ideas for your special session.

Friends Session Remember you can show some love to your friends as well. Schedule a one on one session with your best friend, or a group session with a bunch of your pals. This can be Valentine’s themed, an anti-Valentine session, or just something fun to do together. Keep it light and have a blast.

If you have another idea for a way to express your love via your photos, talk to your photographer!

Ideas for Photos

Thinking of ideas for a photography session can be tough. Your photographer will have some, but it helps to let them know what you’re really looking for.  Searching the internet to get an idea of what your style is can be very helpful.  Don’t expect your photographer to copy anyone, and make sure their specific style matches what you’re wanting.

Make sure to check in with Pinterest to get some ideas.  A great way to share some ideas is to make a pinterest board for reference.  Lots of photographers and clients have their own boards that you can pin from.  And take a look at the KatFour Photo Pinterest Page for great photography ideas.

For those in Columbia check out this specific Pinterest Board or take a look at www.katfourphoto.com for ideas of shots, locations and to contact Kat.

Happy posing and shooting!
